United Nations ECOSOC Grants Special Consultative Status to MICF

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations, based in New York, has granted Special Consultative Status to the Magdalene Iyamu Cancer Foundation (MICF) in recognition of its sustained contributions to cancer awareness, prevention, and public health advocacy.

Through this status, MICF is granted the opportunity to actively participate in the work of the United Nations. MICF representatives are able to register for and take part in official meetings, events, conferences, and related activities at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as well as at UN offices in Geneva and Vienna.

Organizations holding general or special consultative status are permitted to appoint authorized representatives to attend public meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, and, under certain conditions, participate as observers at meetings of the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly, and other United Nations intergovernmental bodies.

In addition, MICF is eligible to submit written statements relevant to the work of ECOSOC in areas where the Foundation has recognized expertise. These statements may be circulated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to members of the Council, allowing MICF to contribute directly to global policy discussions.

The Secretary-General is also authorized to provide United Nations facilities to NGOs in consultative status, including:

  • Accommodation for conferences or smaller meetings related to ECOSOC’s work, subject to availability and UN office conditions
  • Appropriate seating arrangements and access to documentation during public meetings of the General Assembly addressing economic, social, and related matters
  • Opportunities for informal discussions on issues of special interest to participating organizations
  • Access to United Nations press documentation services
  • Timely distribution of documents related to ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies
  • Use of United Nations libraries

This consultative status strengthens MICF’s ability to amplify community-level cancer advocacy on a global stage and reinforces its commitment to contributing to international dialogue on public health, social development, and cancer control.
