Lung, Pancreatic & Support Awareness
November 1
Lung, Pancreatic & Support Awareness
November is a month dedicated not only to raising awareness about some of the most aggressive and often overlooked cancers, but also to honoring the caregivers who stand behind patients every day. Throughout the entire month, global attention is focused on Pancreatic, Lung, Gastric (Stomach), and Neuroendocrine Tumor cancers, alongside Caregivers Month, reminding us that cancer affects more than just the patient.
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Pancreatic cancer is often called a “silent cancer” because its symptoms usually appear late. Many patients are diagnosed when treatment options are limited. November emphasizes the need for greater awareness of early warning signs such as unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, jaundice, and persistent digestive issues.
Education during this month focuses on:
-
Recognizing subtle symptoms early
-
Understanding risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, and family history
-
Encouraging timely medical evaluation and follow-up
Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. While smoking is a major risk factor, non-smokers can also develop lung cancer, particularly due to air pollution, secondhand smoke, and occupational exposures.
November’s lung cancer awareness efforts highlight:
-
The importance of quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke
-
Early symptoms such as chronic cough, chest pain, and breathlessness
-
Reducing stigma and supporting patients with compassion
Gastric (Stomach) Cancer Awareness Month
Stomach cancer is still common in many parts of Africa and is often diagnosed late. Infection with Helicobacter pylori, poor diet, smoking, and delayed medical care increase risk.
Awareness messages include:
-
Paying attention to persistent stomach pain, bloating, and difficulty swallowing
-
Seeking medical care for ongoing digestive symptoms
-
Promoting healthy diets and early testing where available
Neuroendocrine Tumor (NET) Awareness Month
Neuroendocrine tumors are rare and frequently misunderstood cancers that can take years to diagnose. They may present with vague symptoms that are often mistaken for other conditions.
November helps to:
-
Increase understanding of NETs and their symptoms
-
Encourage patients to seek specialist care when symptoms persist
-
Advocate for better diagnosis and support services
Caregivers Month: Honoring the Unsung Heroes
Cancer care does not happen in isolation. Caregivers—family members, friends, and loved ones—provide emotional, physical, and financial support, often at great personal cost. November also recognizes the vital role caregivers play and the importance of supporting their mental and emotional wellbeing.
This month calls on communities to:
-
Acknowledge and appreciate caregivers
-
Provide emotional and practical support
-
Encourage caregivers to care for their own health
Why November Matters
November reminds us that awareness saves lives—but support sustains them. By educating communities, promoting early detection, and standing with both patients and caregivers, we can reduce suffering and improve outcomes.
At Magdalene Iyamu Cancer Foundation (MICF), November strengthens our resolve to educate, advocate, and support, ensuring that no one—patient or caregiver—faces cancer alone.
