Breast Cancer Myths vs Facts: Let’s Talk About What Really Matters

In many Nigerian homes, breast cancer is still surrounded by fear, silence, and misunderstanding. We hear things like “It can’t happen to me” or “Only older women get it.” Sadly, these beliefs often delay screening and treatment. At the Magdalene Iyamu Cancer Foundation (MICF), we have seen how the right information, shared with compassion, can save lives.
Let’s talk openly and honestly about some common breast cancer myths—and the truths that every Nigerian family should know.

“Breast cancer is only for women.”
It’s true that women are more affected, but men can also get breast cancer. Because many men don’t expect it, they often seek help late. Any unusual lump or change in the chest should never be ignored—by anyone.

“I’m still young. Breast cancer is for older people.”
Breast cancer does not check age before it strikes. Many women in Nigeria are diagnosed before the age of 40. Being young does not mean you are immune. Awareness and early screening are important at every age.

“Alcohol doesn’t affect breast cancer risk.”
What we eat and drink matters. Studies show that alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer, especially when consumed often. Making healthier lifestyle choices is one way we can protect ourselves.

“There’s no cancer in my family, so I’m safe.”
This is a very common belief—but it’s not true. Many people diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. That’s why regular screening and self-checks are important for everyone.

“Women who don’t have children don’t get breast cancer.”
Breast cancer can affect women whether or not they have children. In fact, women who have no children or have children later in life may have a higher risk. Every woman deserves to stay informed and proactive about her health.

Faith and Action Can Walk Together
Having faith does not mean ignoring medical advice. In fact, seeking screening and early care is an act of wisdom and self-love. God has given us knowledge, doctors, and tools to protect life. Using them is not fear—it is faith in action.
