Breast & Liver Cancer Awareness

October 1 - October 31

October — Breast & Liver Cancer Awareness

October is a powerful month in the global fight against cancer. Throughout the entire month, attention is focused on Breast Cancer Awareness and Liver Cancer Awareness, two conditions that continue to affect millions of lives worldwide, including here in Nigeria. This month serves as a reminder that early detection, education, and community support save lives.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women in Nigeria. Sadly, many cases are still diagnosed at advanced stages due to late presentation, fear, stigma, and lack of access to screening. October is dedicated to educating women and families about the importance of breast self-examination, clinical breast exams, and timely medical checks.

Awareness activities during this month emphasize:

  • Knowing the early warning signs of breast cancer

  • Encouraging regular screening and self-examination

  • Dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer

  • Supporting survivors and families affected by the disease

Global events such as World Breast Cancer Day and other awareness weeks within October help amplify the message that breast cancer is treatable when detected early.

Liver Cancer Awareness Month

Liver cancer is a growing health concern in Nigeria, often linked to hepatitis B and C infections, alcohol use, and late diagnosis. Many people live with liver disease for years without symptoms, making awareness and preventive care critical.

October’s focus on liver cancer highlights:

  • The importance of hepatitis B vaccination and testing

  • Reducing alcohol-related liver damage

  • Seeking medical attention for persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, jaundice, or unexplained weight loss

  • Promoting routine health checks for at-risk individuals

Why October Matters

October provides an opportunity for communities, health workers, faith-based organizations, and civil society groups to come together and break the silence around cancer. Through education, outreach programs, screening campaigns, and survivor support, lives can be saved.

At Magdalene Iyamu Cancer Foundation (MICF), October is a time to intensify our commitment to awareness, early detection, and compassionate support, ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.
