SUMMARY:Breast & Liver Cancer Awareness
DESCRIPTION:October — Breast & Liver Cancer Awareness\nOctober is a powerful month in the global fight against cancer. Throughout the entire month\, attention is focused on Breast Cancer Awareness and Liver Cancer Awareness\, two conditions that continue to affect millions of lives worldwide\, including here in Nigeria. This month serves as a reminder that early detection\, education\, and community support save lives. \nBreast Cancer Awareness Month\nBreast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women in Nigeria. Sadly\, many cases are still diagnosed at advanced stages due to late presentation\, fear\, stigma\, and lack of access to screening. October is dedicated to educating women and families about the importance of breast self-examination\, clinical breast exams\, and timely medical checks. \nAwareness activities during this month emphasize: \n\n\nKnowing the early warning signs of breast cancer \n\n\nEncouraging regular screening and self-examination \n\n\nDispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer \n\n\nSupporting survivors and families affected by the disease \n\n\nGlobal events such as World Breast Cancer Day and other awareness weeks within October help amplify the message that breast cancer is treatable when detected early. \nLiver Cancer Awareness Month\nLiver cancer is a growing health concern in Nigeria\, often linked to hepatitis B and C infections\, alcohol use\, and late diagnosis. Many people live with liver disease for years without symptoms\, making awareness and preventive care critical. \nOctober’s focus on liver cancer highlights: \n\n\nThe importance of hepatitis B vaccination and testing \n\n\nReducing alcohol-related liver damage \n\n\nSeeking medical attention for persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain\, jaundice\, or unexplained weight loss \n\n\nPromoting routine health checks for at-risk individuals \n\n\nWhy October Matters\nOctober provides an opportunity for communities\, health workers\, faith-based organizations\, and civil society groups to come together and break the silence around cancer. Through education\, outreach programs\, screening campaigns\, and survivor support\, lives can be saved. \nAt Magdalene Iyamu Cancer Foundation (MICF)\, October is a time to intensify our commitment to awareness\, early detection\, and compassionate support\, ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.

SUMMARY:Lung\, Pancreatic & Support Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Lung\, Pancreatic & Support Awareness\nNovember is a month dedicated not only to raising awareness about some of the most aggressive and often overlooked cancers\, but also to honoring the caregivers who stand behind patients every day. Throughout the entire month\, global attention is focused on Pancreatic\, Lung\, Gastric (Stomach)\, and Neuroendocrine Tumor cancers\, alongside Caregivers Month\, reminding us that cancer affects more than just the patient. \nPancreatic Cancer Awareness Month\nPancreatic cancer is often called a “silent cancer” because its symptoms usually appear late. Many patients are diagnosed when treatment options are limited. November emphasizes the need for greater awareness of early warning signs such as unexplained weight loss\, abdominal pain\, jaundice\, and persistent digestive issues. \nEducation during this month focuses on: \n\n\nRecognizing subtle symptoms early \n\n\nUnderstanding risk factors such as smoking\, diabetes\, and family history \n\n\nEncouraging timely medical evaluation and follow-up \n\n\nLung Cancer Awareness Month\nLung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. While smoking is a major risk factor\, non-smokers can also develop lung cancer\, particularly due to air pollution\, secondhand smoke\, and occupational exposures. \nNovember’s lung cancer awareness efforts highlight: \n\n\nThe importance of quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke \n\n\nEarly symptoms such as chronic cough\, chest pain\, and breathlessness \n\n\nReducing stigma and supporting patients with compassion \n\n\nGastric (Stomach) Cancer Awareness Month\nStomach cancer is still common in many parts of Africa and is often diagnosed late. Infection with Helicobacter pylori\, poor diet\, smoking\, and delayed medical care increase risk. \nAwareness messages include: \n\n\nPaying attention to persistent stomach pain\, bloating\, and difficulty swallowing \n\n\nSeeking medical care for ongoing digestive symptoms \n\n\nPromoting healthy diets and early testing where available \n\n\nNeuroendocrine Tumor (NET) Awareness Month\nNeuroendocrine tumors are rare and frequently misunderstood cancers that can take years to diagnose. They may present with vague symptoms that are often mistaken for other conditions. \nNovember helps to: \n\n\nIncrease understanding of NETs and their symptoms \n\n\nEncourage patients to seek specialist care when symptoms persist \n\n\nAdvocate for better diagnosis and support services \n\n\nCaregivers Month: Honoring the Unsung Heroes\nCancer care does not happen in isolation. Caregivers—family members\, friends\, and loved ones—provide emotional\, physical\, and financial support\, often at great personal cost. November also recognizes the vital role caregivers play and the importance of supporting their mental and emotional wellbeing. \nThis month calls on communities to: \n\n\nAcknowledge and appreciate caregivers \n\n\nProvide emotional and practical support \n\n\nEncourage caregivers to care for their own health \n\n\nWhy November Matters\nNovember reminds us that awareness saves lives—but support sustains them. By educating communities\, promoting early detection\, and standing with both patients and caregivers\, we can reduce suffering and improve outcomes. \nAt Magdalene Iyamu Cancer Foundation (MICF)\, November strengthens our resolve to educate\, advocate\, and support\, ensuring that no one—patient or caregiver—faces cancer alone.
